Velashape

This non-invasive treatment uses a combination of radiofrequency (RF) energy, infrared light energy, and mechanical vacuum massage to reduce the appearance of cellulite on the thighs and buttocks, as well as the circumference of those areas of the body.

How Does It Work?

Cellulite—which is estimated to affect 90 percent of women and 10 percent of men—develops when fat cells enlarge and begin to push up through the skin’s collagen, creating “dimples” on the skin’s surface. Velashape targets those fat cells with RF and infrared light energies, setting in motion a process that will eventually cause the fat cells to shrink. In addition, Velashape’s mechanical vacuum device manipulates the targeted fat tissue, smoothing out its lumpy appearance.

One multi-center clinical trial in which women’s thighs were treated with Velashape reported that 85 percent of the treated areas experienced decreases in their circumferences. The decreases ranged from slightly less than half an inch to three inches.

What Is the Treatment Like?

The procedure generally lasts less than an hour. The exact amount of time will depend on how much of your skin is being treated. Velashape has two applicators: one for large areas and one for small.

No anesthetic is needed. Most people say the treatment is like a deep tissue massage—not discomforting at all. You’ll feel a slight tugging on your skin as Velashape’s vacuum device pulls your skin into position. Then, as the heat is applied, you’ll feel your skin warming up. But, again, it’s not an unpleasant sensation.

After the treatment, you can return immediately to your daily activities. Your skin will retain a slight sensation of warmth, however, for several more hours. You may see a bit of redness on the treated area and perhaps some mild bruising.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Your physician will advise you on how many treatments will be most effective for your skin. The typical treatment series includes 4 to 6 weekly sessions.

When Will I See Results?

You can expect to see some immediate tightening and smoothing of your skin. But most results won’t be apparent for 6 to 8 weeks following your final treatment session.

To maintain the Velashape’s effects, you’ll need periodic maintenance treatments. Of course, it’s also important that you watch your diet and continue to exercise. If you put on weight, the cellulite will return.
