This smooth (non-granular), long-lasting gel filler is a popular treatment for temporarily softening the appearance of facial lines and folds, including deep ones around the mouth.
How Does It Work?
Youthful, healthy skin contains significant amounts of hyaluronic acid, which hydrates skin and, thus, helps give it both volume and structure. Unfortunately, the aging process and sun exposure deplete the skin of this essential substance, eventually leading to sags, folds, and wrinkles.
Juvederm works by replenishing some of the lost hyaluronic acid, giving the skin more fullness and a smoother appearance. It comes in two strengths: Ultra XC (for mild to moderate wrinkles) and Ultra Plus XC (for deeper folds).
What Does It Treat?
Juvederm is used to treat a variety of unwanted facial wrinkles, but particularly the two often considered most troublesome:
- nasolabial (“smile”) lines, which run from the corners of the nose to the corners of the mouth, and
- pre-jowl sulcus (“marionette”) lines, which run from the corners of the mouth down to the chin.
Both of these types of facial wrinkles can make you look older than your age and more tired than you actually feel.
Juvederm is also sometimes used for forehead lines, verticle lip lines, and “crow’s feet” (lines around the eyes), as well as for plumping up the lips.
Am I a Good Candidate?
Almost everybody is a good candidate for Juvederm. In fact, Juvederm was the first hyaluronic dermal filler to receive approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in people of color. Unlike earlier fillers, it does not increase the risk of hyperpigmentation or hypertrophic scarring in skin with naturally darker tones.
